Ring the School Bell 84/180 days
By far, the highlight of today, after a litany of “to-dos” like piano lessons, tidying the house, yard glove returns, the dreaded Walmart visit, cooking, watching literature lectures on The Hobbit with Melissa, and so on, was the Variety Show which we have been hosting in our home for the last few years.
It was America’s Got Talent, in our very own living room, but without the unforgiving judges.
A Variety Show is basically a talent show with a twist on the name, as designated by my kids. How wonderful it was to relax and enjoy the fruition of the efforts these kids have been pouring into their individual talents through the years. This was a time to showcase and celebrate the result of their diligent work and our (the parents) diligent committment, driving to lessons week after week.
A bit of our repertoire… the Ariss family performed a version of Joy to the World on violin and piano, the Gomez family put on a cute skit about a lemonade stand, my Sabrina performed “The Prelude” on the piano, Celine performed a beautiful piece on the violin, Emilie her sister performed on the piano, and another Sabrina unveiled her first full screening of her extremely entertaining homemade movie, “Spy Wars”, Extremely entertaining because of the effort which she put into it, and the fact that it contained more than half of the audience!
Variety Shows are pretty simple to put together, once a venue is found. The number of guests was manageable, in our situation, and so we hosted it in our own home, although we were crammed in like can of sardines!
This barrel of fun can be enoyed by kids of all ages, and from homeschool or traditional school backgrounds. If your kids are on board with the idea, invite the neighborhood kids, homeschool crowd, or select friends. The intimacy of having a Variety Show in your own living room or other small setting, as opposed to a large school auditorium, is enchanting.
It is also a great confidence-builder, for kids to have the opportunity to perform in front of others.
To host your own Variety Show, here is some information from a post I wrote a short while ago, and “let the show begin!”

** Note to the Reader- Today’s narrative is part of our family’s school journey from a few years ago, during my eldest daughter’s senior year in high school, a rather emotional year, with its many ups and downs. Every day’s blog entry coincides with a day from that special year. It can be read from the beginning by selecting the “Ring the School Bell 180” category on the side bar. Commence with the narrative, “The School Bell- What comes to mind when ‘you’ hear that bell?”

May God shower blessings on your family as he has on mine. Annette
